Hurricanes can bring tremendous amounts of rain in a very short period of time.

That means hurricane preparation isn't only about shutters and impact windows. Homeowners should also pay attention to how water moves around their property.

Before the next storm:

• Clear gutters and downspouts of debris.

• Check that roof runoff is moving away from the home.

• Look for areas where water routinely collects after heavy rain.

• Keep drainage paths and swales clear of obstructions.

• Know your property's flood risk and elevation considerations.

• Avoid unintentionally blocking drainage when adding landscaping, patios, additions, or other improvements.

One of the most overlooked questions in residential design is simple:

“Where is the water going to go?”

In Southwest Florida, that question matters.
